[Howie D] EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Backstreet Boys Star Howie Dorough

One of the biggest boy bands that has been around for decades now is the Backstreet Boys. Recently, the boys dropped their latest Christmas song called “It’s Christmas Time Again,” and that’s just the beginning. There’s a lot in store for their 20th anniversary, and we got to chat with Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys to get the latest on their Christmas song and future plans. Check out what Howie had to say down below!

Fanlala: How would you describe “It’s Christmas Time Again?” Classic BSB? New feel?

Howie Dorough: I would say it’s a classic Backstreet harmony. The pop melody is a continuation of “Incomplete.” It has a pop-rockish feel to it.

F: What kinds of reactions have you gotten from your fans when you announced returning for the song?

HD: We’ve been getting an unbelievable response, it was really an honor and a privilege to have co-written the song with Nick and the other guys. The opportunity came from Disney for their Christmas special. Nick and I were writing and we asked “Why don’t we just write a new Christmas song?” The last one we wrote was 12 years ago, and this one came together really quickly. We presented it to the rest of the guys and they loved it. The Disney Christmas special will air on Christmas weekend. We invited some fans to give it a listen during a sneak preview, and the response was overwhelming, online as well. The responses from fans have been great. They’re telling us it’s a great contemporary sound.

F: Do you have plans lined up for the holiday season?

HD: I’ll try going up with the wife to New Jersey, we’re going to go back to see her family.

F: What’s one Christmas gift from the years past that really sticks out?

HD: A gift that I received when I was around 12 or 13 was from my parents. They got me a karaoke machine. It was a big machine. There was room for cassette tapes and everything. It was really what got me MY start to get me going in my career. I would sing along with the background tracks. The karaoke machine is something I would always credit as something that really helped me get my career going.

F: Is there a chance for a reunion album in the future?

HD: We’re actually working on it right now! All five of us are back together, writing and recording. Everything began three months ago working in London. A bulk of the material we recorded there. We're hoping to wrap up in late January, and hope to release it early next year for the 20th anniversary. We just got our star on the Walk of Fame, so there is a lot happening for us right now and in the near future.

F: There are a ton of new sounds out today, what kind of sound do you think BSB would adapt?

HD: We’ll always have the classic Backstreet Boys harmonies, but it’s also important to evolve so that you stay current and to make sure that you’re on the cutting edge with all of the sounds out there. We’re working with great writers and producers. It’s really fun to experiment with different sounds and midtempos. It’s got a great dance feel to it, at the same time it’s also very pop/rock. There’s just a huge mixture of this and that.

F: Individually, is there any artist today you’d love to collaborate with?

HD: Oh wow, there are so many great ones out there. I’d love to work with Adele, and we’ve talked about Lady Antebellum a lot. There are just so many out there. Train is great, and Coldplay is, by far, my favorite out there. There’s just a lot of great talent.

Before we wrapped our interview, Howie said "We’re definitely wishing a Happy Holidays to all of our fans and hope they get to spend time with loved ones. Our hearts go out to those in New York in New Jersey, and we’re hoping for a speedy recovery. And we just want to say thanks for all of the support from the past 20 years with the Backstreet Boys. I’m really excited for all of this in the future. There are some great shows coming up, along with the Disney Christmas morning special. We have the tree lighting at The Grove this Sunday, and we’ll be presenting at the American Music Awards. It’s going to be an amazing 20th anniversary."
