The Backstreet Boys are back, announcing today that Kevin Richardson will rejoin the group for a reunion performance on “Good Morning America.”
“We’re going to be coming to perform for you guys on August 31,” A.J. McLean said today in a live interview on “GMA.” “The first time together, all five of us.”
McLean appeared alongside fellow band members Richardson, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough and Brian Littrell from the London studio where the quintet revealed they’ve been recording their new album.
“It’s our first time in the studio together, all five of us, since 2005,” Dorough said. “We’re recording our brand new record right here in London.”
The Backstreet Boys rose to fame in the band-boy crazed 1990s after the release of their debut album, “Backstreet Boys,” in 1996. After nearly eight years together, he boys, who have sold over 130 million records worldwide and filled countless arenas with screaming girl fans, took a two-year hiatus but came back together on their 2005 album, “Never Gone.”
Just one year later Richardson left the band to pursue other interests. In April of last year, during a performance in London, the remaining Backstreet Boys -Carter, Dorough, Littrell and McLean – touring without Richardson, announced that Richardson would rejoin them for a new album.
Now the five, who have seen their share of marriage, health and addiction issues among them in the nearly two decades since their debut, are living together as they work on their new album.
“We wake up. We have breakfast together. We’re not sick of each other at all,” said Carter. “It’s awesome. It really is. The vibe is fantastic.”
The band is working with producer Martin Terefe, who has also worked with Mary J. Blige, Train and Jason Mraz among others, to record their new tracks.
The new album is expected to be released next spring, just as the group celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Looking back on their 20 years together in the music business, the newly rejoined Richardson had words of advice for his younger self.
“I would say hang on,” he said. “It’s going to be a bumpy ride but it’s going to be amazing and enjoy every step of the way.”
The band will appear on “GMA” as part of the show’s Summer Concert series in Central Park.
