[#bsbcruise2011] Backstreet Boys Set Sail on 2nd Annual Fan Cruise

Anchors aweigh! Following their successful tour with New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys are now setting sail on their second annual fan cruise.  It leaves Miami on Friday and heads to the Bahamas, returning on December 5.  Current Backstreet members Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, AJ McLean and Howie Dorough will all be on board, but former member Kevin Richardson will rejoin his ex-band mates for a beach party the group is hosting when they dock in the Bahamas.

"We get out there and it's just a big party," Howie tells ABC News Radio.  "It's a chance for our fans just to really get a chance to connect with us outside of just...the environment that they see us up on stage."  During the cruise, Howie says Backstreet fans get plenty of up-close-and-personal time with the group.  "We're interacting with the fans, you know, walking around and stuff, but we're also doing games, karaoke, enjoying the nightlife, and stuff like that on the boat," explains Howie.  "We actually do put on a concert for the fans, and it's just fun.  I think those who came on it last year are all coming back this year and they've told all their friends."

Howie said last year, he was amazed at the wide range of fans he saw on the cruise.  "I see moms, daughters.  I see grandkids.  I see grandparents," he says.  "It's great that we're able to touch so many different lives and so many different ages [and] ethnicities, you know."  Asked why, after nearly 20 years, Backstreet Boys fans are still so loyal that they actually choose to spend their vacation with the group, Howie says he's not quite sure.  "All I can say is I hope it's [a testament] to the good music...and I think that our fan base, they see that we're good people, that we're very approachable," he says, adding, "Even with the success that we've had, a lot of people could say that [it]...could have gone to our heads, but we're just very down-to-earth guys."

After the cruise, the guys will get together for another happy occasion: AJ's wedding on December 17.
